Ghana’s Chief of Staff Frema Osei-Opare who is allegedly also interested in the governing NPP’s Running mate slot has taken her lobby to the Asante Monarchy riding on the Affirmative Action Bill.
The Chief of staff who has been eyeing the Running Mate slot even before the election Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia met the Asanteman Queen Mothers at a Food Fair organized to celebrate their works as queen mothers on Monday, 22 April 2024 in the Ashanti Region.
The “power-conscious” Frema Osei-Opare used the window to shower praises on the Asantehene for fostering greater female participation in governance within the Ashanti kingdom urging him to support the Affirmative Action Bill.
The chief of staff who has spent nearly 8 years in power has been criticized for being the major cause of governance challenges under the Akufo-Addo administration has now launched an affirmative campaign as Bawumia is being pressured to pick a woman running mate.
“During your reign as Asantehene, we have seen visible signs of more queen mothers being actively involved in the management of the Ashanti kingdom…. Queen mothers are now allowed to attend Asanteman Council meetings, which is a deliberate effort to empower women.” She praised the Otumfuo
“Nana, your leadership style not only inspires confidence but also sets a powerful example for the next generation of male leaders to follow,” Frema Opare said. “I therefore appeal to you, Otumfuo, to add your voice for the passage of the Affirmative Action Bill.” She rapped the wise King.
“Nana, Ashanti Region has the highest number of MPs in Parliament, as compared to other regions, so your counsel can go a long way to ensure the passage of this Bill,” she added.
Women groups have been mounting pressure on the NPP flagbearer to choose a woman running mate. Names such as Naa Torshie and Frema Opare have been suggested but none of them is expected to be named.
