Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the running mate for John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has assured him that she won’t claim to have been just a “driver’s mate” if they face challenges in their administration.
Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, while presenting his vision as the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), mentioned that he started out as a “driver’s mate,” which he believed limited his effectiveness in addressing certain government challenges.
During her introduction in Accra on Wednesday, Prof Opoku-Agyemang assured former President Mahama that she will share in the party’s successes and take responsibility for any setbacks. She stated, “I will share in our collective successes and share responsibility for our setbacks if any. And when the time comes, Your Excellency John Mahama, I will not claim to have been just the driver’s mate.”
Speaking at her official unveiling, the former Education Minister emphasized, “The election is not just about bringing the NDC back to power, which is essential in our current circumstances.” She continued, highlighting the broader purpose of the elections, “The elections ahead and winning them are about winning elections for a purpose. The purpose goes beyond those mentioned above.”
“It is an opportunity to heal our country once again. It is about pulling Ghana back from the brink of destruction, of stopping corruption from becoming normal, of curbing incomprehensible greed, and of alleviating deep despair.”
“We must strive for a Ghana where citizens have confidence and hope and are determined to regain their independence of thought and agenda. We must work for a Ghana that can at least feed itself; where the law genuinely functions; where prosperity is shared; where democracy remains steadfast; where people are not mistreated and where the basic necessities of life are accessible to the majority, if not all.”
“The victory we aim for as a party is to invite everyone to the demanding task of rebuilding a fractured Ghana, of rekindling hope, in a way that the NDC is known for through its history and accomplishments.”
