Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to receive an official welcome in North Korea today after arriving in Pyongyang in the early hours of the morning.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un personally greeted Putin at the airport just before 03:00 local time, signaling the start of a significant diplomatic visit.
The visit comes as Putin seeks to bolster alliances amid increasing isolation from the West following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. After North Korea, Putin will travel to Vietnam to discuss trade and other issues with another long-time ally.
Both countries have denied any arms deals but have pledged to strengthen military ties. The US and Seoul have accused North Korea of supplying Russia with artillery and other military equipment, likely in exchange for food and military aid.
This visit underscores their commitment to deepening cooperation despite international scrutiny.
The two leaders have a busy nine-hour agenda planned, including a photo opportunity, 90 minutes of talks, and a tea party.
This is their second meeting since September when they convened in eastern Russia, and notably, Putin’s first visit to Pyongyang since 2000.
Putin and Kim last met at the Vostochny Cosmodrome in Russia’s Amur region in September 2023, where they exchanged symbolic gifts, including guns. While the specifics of their discussions were not disclosed, the meeting highlighted their mutual interests: Russia’s need for ammunition for its war in Ukraine and North Korea’s desire for satellite technology.
Pyongyang has been elaborately decorated for Putin’s visit, with portraits of the Russian leader and Russian flags lining the streets. Upon his arrival, Putin was greeted with a hug from Kim and a bouquet of red roses.
The city’s main roads feature banners with messages such as “The friendship between North Korea and Russia is eternal” and “We warmly welcome comrade Russian President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin.”
Putin and Kim are expected to spend nine hours together, participating in various meetings, a gala concert, and a state reception.
This visit highlights the deepening ties between the two nations as they navigate their respective geopolitical challenges. Stay tuned for updates on this historic visit as it unfolds.
