The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has made a bold pledge to reduce electricity tariffs by 50% if elected president in the 2024 general elections.
He revealed that this ambitious target would be achieved by shifting Ghana’s energy reliance from traditional fossil fuels and hydropower to solar energy.
Speaking at an event at the Church of Pentecost in Teshie, Dr. Bawumia outlined his vision for a more sustainable energy future, explaining that fluctuating electricity costs have burdened households and businesses alike. He attributed these high costs to Ghana’s current dependence on oil, gas, and hydropower, which he said are not sustainable in the long term.
“I want Ghana to take a bold decision and move away from primary dependence on oil and gas and depend on solar power to generate electricity,” he stated. He emphasized that by harnessing solar energy—an abundant and free resource in Ghana—the country could drastically reduce its electricity costs.
To achieve this, Dr. Bawumia pledged to increase solar power generation by 2000MW, which he said would cut electricity bills in half. As part of his plan, he also promised to bolster local industries to produce the necessary solar panels, reducing the need for imports and creating jobs in the process.
“Generating this 2000MW would require a lot of solar panels and I don’t want us to import solar panels so we will set up factories here in Ghana for the manufacturing of solar panels,” he declared to a supportive audience, which responded with applause and cheers.
