The People’s National Convention (PNC) has officially endorsed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of Ghana’s December 7 general elections.
This landmark declaration, announced on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, follows extensive consultations with the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) and Functional Executive Committee (FEC).
Speaking at a press conference in Accra, PNC National Chairman Samson Asaki Awingobit explained the party’s decision to back the NDC presidential candidate. “Nine days to the general election, the PNC not having a presidential candidate cannot sit neutral,” he stated. “At the end of deliberation… majority have declared that the PNC will throw our support to the NDC presidential candidate for the 2024 general election.”
Awingobit emphasized that the decision was aimed at fostering a collaborative relationship between the PNC and the next NDC-led government. “We have thrown our support so that the next government that will be formed by the NDC [is] collaborated or supported by the PNC,” he added.
The endorsement comes as political parties intensify campaigns ahead of the crucial elections, with the PNC’s backing potentially boosting the NDC’s chances in a competitive race.
Political observers note that the PNC’s move underscores its intent to remain relevant in national politics despite not fielding a presidential candidate in this year’s elections. The party’s leadership has called on its supporters nationwide to rally behind the NDC to secure victory on December 7.
