The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has pledged to sign the controversial anti-LGBTQ+ bill into law if he is elected President in the upcoming general elections.
The bill, which seeks to outlaw LGBTQ+ activities in Ghana, is currently pending approval from President Nana Akufo-Addo. Its implementation has been delayed due to legal challenges questioning its constitutionality, with the Supreme Court expected to deliver its ruling on the matter on December 18.
Dr. Bawumia made the announcement during a worship service at the Philadelphia Church in Kumasi, where he assured the congregation of his commitment to addressing key legislative priorities if he assumes office.
“There are several policies and initiatives yet to be finalized. When I assume office, I will ensure their completion to bring satisfaction to everyone,” Dr. Bawumia stated.
He specifically emphasized his readiness to sign the anti-LGBTQ+ bill, once all legal processes are resolved, saying, “Among these policies is the LGBTQ+ bill currently pending in Parliament, which I will sign without hesitation.”
Dr. Bawumia also highlighted the Anti-Witchcraft bill as another significant piece of legislation that he would prioritize, stressing its importance in addressing social issues in Ghana.
The anti-LGBTQ+ bill has sparked heated debates across Ghana, with strong support from many religious and cultural groups who argue that it aligns with Ghanaian values, while human rights organizations have raised concerns about its potential impact on individual freedoms and international relations.
Dr. Bawumia’s statement comes as political parties in Ghana intensify their campaigns ahead of the December 7, 2024 elections, with legislative and social issues taking center stage in public discourse.
