One person has reportedly died and five others injured in renewed tribal clashes during this year’s Yam Festival in Nkwanta South district of the Oti Region.
Residents within the municipality are in a state of fear while some have started fleeing the area.
Residents tell Asaase News that tension is mounting in the area after one person was allegedly stabbed to death.
Asaase News’s Solomon Mensah-Ahiable reports that this is not the first time that this is happening.
He said houses, properties and other installations are now being attacked.
A background to the issue indicated that fresh fighting broke out between Adele, Challa and Akyode tribes, which forced thousands of residents to flee their homes in the Nkwanta township to neighbouring districts and municipalities in the Oti Region.
The ethnic groups had clashed over the performance of ritual rites to herald the 2023 annual Yam Festival of the Akyode group
On 29 September last year, a man believed to be in his late 30s was shot dead in his farm by unknown assailants.
Residents have called for the immediate intervention of the police in addressing the matter.
Meanwhile, the injured victims are currently at the Nkwanta South Government Hospital receiving treatment while the body of the deceased is currently at the morgue awaiting autopsy.
