The representative for Akan Constituency in the Oti Region, Yao Gomado, has alleged that the National Security Ministry is attempting to conceal the deaths of two young men from the Akan constituency.
Speaking in an interview on Joy FM’s Newsnight on Wednesday, December 27, the Member of Parliament expressed skepticism about the accuracy of the National Security’s account of the events surrounding the unfortunate incident.
The Ministry of National Security has refuted allegations of intentionally targeting and causing the deaths of two individuals in the Akan Constituency within the Oti Region.
This response comes in the wake of the tragic incident in the Yadzo community of the Oti Region on Monday, where two footballers reportedly lost their lives while being pursued by National Security Operatives.
The pursuit allegedly occurred as the individuals were attempting to transport cocoa beans to Togo.
In a statement issued on December 27, the National Security Ministry explained that “the incident leading to the death of the two persons was purely accidental and not borne out of a targeted operation.”
Reacting to this, the MP said “I think the National Security are just trying to cover up. They should bury their heads in shame.”
The legislator revealed that he became aware of the incident and subsequently contacted the District Chief Executive (DCE) to verify the details. However, the DCE declined to provide any information.
Mr. Gomado mentioned that, after being denied information by the DCE, he sought details from an officer who had been dispatched to investigate the scene of the accident, and this officer relayed the account of what had occurred.
“He told me that the so-called National Security operatives were chasing a taxi suspected to be carrying cocoa on the Eastern corridor road getting to Koto-Nkwanta, their lights were off and they moved out from their lane to the opposite lane to cross the taxi, in so doing, they crashed with the two young men – footballers which resulted to their death,” he accounted.
The legislator asserted that he did not concoct any information, countering the National Security’s accusation. He maintained that he reported based on the information he gathered regarding the tragic incident.
He emphasized that he anticipated the National Security to acknowledge the handling of the situation and urged the grieving families to remain patient.
Assuring that investigations would be carried out with the support of the government to ensure justice, he sought to reassure the affected families of a thorough inquiry into the matter.
