A significant overflow of water from the Akosombo Dam has unleashed a crisis, displacing thousands of residents in the Mepe, Battor and 20 other communities in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region.
Presently, more than 700 households find themselves grappling with the rising waters as a result of the Akosombo Dam spillage, while residents desperately strive to salvage their belongings from the impending deluge.
The floodwaters have already exacted a heavy toll, claiming properties worth thousands of Ghana Cedis, including numerous buildings.
Government Response Lags
Despite these displacements commencing a week ago, both local and central government authorities have displayed limited proactive responses, with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) primarily focused on data collection.
This lack of action has prompted concerns regarding the potential for a significant disease outbreak, given the precarious state of portable water supply in the affected areas. To quench their thirst, many residents are left with no choice but to draw water directly from the river, thereby heightening the risk.
As the situation unfolds, the displaced communities and the broader region await prompt and effective measures to mitigate the crisis and address the pressing issues at hand.
