The management of Akroma Gold company limited, a licensed large scale mining company in Ghana received students from the Faculty of Law of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) as part of their study on Mineral and Mining laws and their impact on the environment.
The one-day tour of the facility was intended to expose the students to real life mining situations, impact assessment and measures put in place by the mining company to address these issues.
The HR and community relations manager the company, Mr. Frederick Somuah Obeng, intimated that the company is committed to not just meeting the demands of their staff, but also ensuring sustainable mining practices to ensure that future generations will not suffer from unsustainable mining practices.
The Group head of HR, Madam Gertrude Oheneba Sodji, who happened to be on site during the visit took her time to engage the students. She also touched on the various corporate social initiatives the company has undertaken and the plans they have for the indigens which include the recently completed ultra-modern toilet facility for the people in Esaase.
Speaking to the students, the team sensitized them on the need for stringent policies in the mining sector that will not only help to protect the environment, but also help maintain some of the revenue generated in the district.
The students, led by Professor John Baloro were concerned about the rampant occurrence of illegal mining activities known as galamsey and were surprised that the activities of the mining company were properly regulated unlike many other mining activities they had seen on social media.
The technical mining team led by Mr. Samuel Teye Agyemang (Mine Manager) took the students through the mining process and assured them of the strict measures that are undertaken to ensure sustainable mining practices. The students in turn showed their gratitude as they had a realistic view of how a licensed mining company operates and understood that not all mining activities degrade the environment.
