President Akufo-Addo has directed the immediate deployment of police and military forces to intensify the fight against illegal small-scale mining, commonly known as galamsey, as public demands for urgent action mount.
The decision followed a high-level national security meeting that focused on the devastating impact of galamsey on the nation’s river bodies and environment.
The government, under increasing scrutiny, is now stepping up efforts to address the illegal mining crisis, which has severely polluted water sources and destroyed large swaths of land.
The move comes just days after Organized Labour issued a stern ultimatum, threatening a nationwide strike by the end of September if the government fails to take decisive action against galamsey.
Other influential voices, including religious leaders and civil society groups, have echoed these calls, urging the government to act swiftly in curbing the destructive mining practices.
