Kwadjo Asante, the Member of Parliament for Suhum, has revealed that he was removed from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs’ WhatsApp platforms shortly after filing his nomination to contest the 2024 parliamentary elections as an independent candidate.
Hon. Asante, who is among four MPs whose seats were declared vacant by Speaker Alban Bagbin, disclosed that Frank Annoh-Dompreh, the Chief Whip of the NPP caucus, was responsible for his removal from the group.
In an interview, Asante shared that his removal happened immediately after he submitted his documents to run as an independent candidate. “The moment I filed my documents to contest as independent, they took me off the NPP MPs platform. Annoh-Dompreh, the Chief Whip, took me off but the same person has added me back. That was about two or three days ago,” Asante said, as reported by 3news.com.
Although he was later reinstated in the group, Asante noted that no explanation was given for either his removal or his return. He chose not to inquire further, believing it may have been a mistake.
Asante also clarified his stance on rumors that he had reconsidered his decision to run as an independent candidate. After being added back to the platform, he kept quiet until seeing reports that he had withdrawn his candidacy.
At that point, he felt compelled to respond. “When I saw the publication of me rescinding my decision yesterday, I wrote that it was fake when it appeared on the page. It’s about me, so I needed to clarify things to them,” he explained.
Addressing his current position, Asante made it clear that while he is no longer affiliated with the NPP, he remains dedicated to serving his constituents. “If I go to Parliament now, my tenure hasn’t ended. To the best of my knowledge, I’m serving Ghanaians. I’m not an NPP MP, I’m Suhum MP,” he stated.
Kwadjo Asante’s decision to contest as an independent candidate has raised questions about his future in Parliament and the dynamics within the NPP caucus, as the party navigates internal challenges in the lead-up to the 2024 elections.
