Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has issued a stern warning to the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies to exercise caution as the 2024 general elections draw near.
Speaking at a press conference on Saturday, June 8, following the release of the NDC’s parliamentary candidate for Awutu Senya East, Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okunor, from police custody, Asiedu Nketia emphasized the importance of impartiality in law enforcement.
General Mosquito, as Asiedu Nketia is affectionately known, stated that no Ghanaian laws were designed to intimidate or coerce citizens, and he vowed to resist any attempts by state agencies to intimidate NDC supporters.
“The laws of the country are meant for all of us. There should be no discrimination in applying them. We will not be victims of the peace that the country enjoys. Freedom is not free. We will fight for freedom. We will not allow the coercive powers of the state to be used against us,” he declared.
Naa Koryoo was detained at the Cantonments Police Station on Friday, June 7, after being invited for questioning, a move that sparked outrage among NDC supporters who gathered at the station to demand her release.
The incident drew widespread condemnation, including from former President John Dramani Mahama, who criticized the detention as politically motivated.
Naa Koryoo’s assistant, Delali Sewarkpor, also labeled the detention as political persecution orchestrated by elements within the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP). The NDC has pledged to continue fighting for the rights of its members and ensuring that all laws are applied equally without discrimination or intimidation.
