In the lead-up to Ghana’s 2024 general elections, the Asogli State Council has issued a heartfelt appeal to all citizens, urging peace, unity, and responsibility.
With just days to go before the nation selects its president and members of parliament, the Council emphasized the critical importance of maintaining Ghana’s democratic values and fostering an atmosphere conducive to national progress.
The Council’s statement highlighted that Election 2024 presents a unique opportunity for Ghanaians to reaffirm their commitment to democracy. “We must approach it with a sense of responsibility and maturity, recognising that peace is the foundation upon which we can build a prosperous future. Violence and political intolerance have no place in our democracy. In these challenging times, what Ghanaians need is hope, not fear,” the statement read.
A Call to Leaders and Institutions
The Asogli State Council underscored the need for political leaders to prioritize national interests over partisan agendas. Traditional and religious leaders, civil society organizations, and the media were also called upon to play pivotal roles in fostering fairness and transparency. The Council urged the media to exercise caution in their reportage, avoiding the dissemination of false or unverified information. Similarly, the public was encouraged to use social media responsibly to prevent the spread of misinformation.
Addressing political leaders directly, the Council reminded them that the desire to lead should not be a “do-or-die affair.” Instead, leaders should view their opponents as partners in national service, not adversaries. This spirit of collaboration, the Council noted, is essential for creating peaceful and harmonious living conditions in Ghana, thereby reducing the risk of citizens seeking solace abroad due to instability at home.
The Council called on security services to act with impartiality and professionalism, ensuring the safety of all citizens. No one, they emphasized, should feel unsafe or intimidated while exercising their democratic rights.
The Electoral Commission was urged to uphold the principles of free, fair, and transparent elections. The Council also condemned provocative acts such as distributing food or cash at polling stations, describing such actions as deeply troubling and undermining the integrity of the electoral process.
Labeling the 2024 elections as a defining moment for the country, the Asogli State Council appealed for a high voter turnout on December 7. “Let us come out in our numbers, vote peacefully, and make Ghana proud. Indifference will destroy our democracy and create a breeding ground for undesirable outcomes,” the statement emphasized.
The Council concluded by reminding Ghanaians of their pledge to be faithful and loyal to the nation, urging them to demonstrate to the world that they are capable of managing their own affairs. “Together, we can ensure that the results of this election reflect the will of the people and strengthen our democracy.”
