The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) have opened nominations today, Wednesday, May 31, 2023 for the upcoming by-election in the Assin North Constituency of the Central region.
This internal primary by the NPP comes after Parliament declared the Assin North seat vacant due to a Supreme Court ruling on James Gyakye Quayson’s eligibility to ocuppy the seat.
On May 17th, the Supreme Court unanimously ordered Ghana’s Parliament to remove James Gyakye Quayson’s name from its records as the Member of Parliament for the Assin North constituency.
The NPP’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, issued a statement on May 30th, announcing that nomination forms can be purchased at the Constituency Party Office until Thursday, June 1st.
The internal election is set to occur on Wednesday, June 7th, 2023.
This decision was made following the approval of the Steering Committee (SC) during a meeting held on Tuesday, May 30, 2023.
“The New Patriotic Party, at its Steering Committee (SC) meeting held on Tuesday, May 30, 2023, approved the following timelines for holding the parliamentary primary election at Assin North for the by-election:
- Opening of Nominations: Wednesday, May 31, 2023
- Closing of Nominations: Thursday, June 1, 2023
- Election: Wednesday, June 7, 2023
The Party has also approved detailed Rules and Regulations to govern the conduct of the parliamentary primary election which would be made available to stakeholders. However, Nomination Forms will be available at the Constituency Party Office for purchase,” the NPP stated in its statement.
