Some chiefs in the Ashanti region are proposing a ban to campaign activities by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region until they produce Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the party.
In addition to the proposed ban, the chiefs are calling for the Chief of Bantama to shut down Chairman Wontumi’s media entity. Expressing their dissatisfaction, they argue that the Ashanti Region has been a stronghold for the ruling NPP, and they find it unacceptable to receive disrespect from the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman.
During a meeting between party executives and the Chiefs of the Ashanti Kingdom, one chief stated that; “For me, I want the Bantamahene to close down his radio station. Also, I believe that it is important that the NPP be banned from campaigning in the Ashanti Region if they do not produce Wontumi. They should not be allowed to lift even a flag in the Ashanti Region for their campaign so that they will be forced to produce him.”
Chairman Wontumi has faced significant scrutiny following alleged derogatory remarks about the King of the Ashanti Kingdom during the party’s parliamentary vetting.
Scheduled to meet Manhyia on Monday, January 22, 2024, Chairman Wontumi could not attend due to health reasons. The Chiefs have granted him an extension until Monday, January 29, 2024, to appear before them.
