The Electoral Commission (EC) has officially declared Elikplim Akurugu as the Member of Parliament-elect for the Dome-Kwabenya constituency, after completing the collation of results from the recent elections.
Elikplim Akurugu, who ran under the banner of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), secured a significant victory in the constituency, defeating his main contender from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mike Ocquaye Jnr.
The EC, after a thorough process of result verification and collation, announced the outcome today, marking the conclusion of the election proceedings for the constituency.
This marks the first time the NDC has won the Dome-Kwabenya seat, a significant achievement for the party in what has traditionally been a stronghold for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Elikplim Akurugu secured 50,967 votes, narrowly defeating the NPP’s Mike Ocquaye Jnr, who garnered 50,669 votes. The slim margin of victory underscores the highly competitive nature of the race and reflects the growing support for the NDC in the constituency. Akurugu’s win is seen as a major political shift in the area, which has been dominated by the NPP for years.
In her short speech, Akurugu expressed gratitude to the voters for their trust and pledged to work tirelessly to represent their interests in Parliament. She also emphasized the importance of unity and progress for the constituency as he embarks on his new role as MP.
