The High Court in Koforidua has issued an interim injunction against the swearing-in of Ernest Kumi, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament-elect for Akwatia.
On December 12, 2024, the Electoral Commission officially declared Ernest Kumi the winner of the Akwatia parliamentary seat after a protracted and contentious electoral process.
The declaration, made at the National Police Training School in Tesano, Accra, came after multiple failed attempts to finalize the results in the Eastern Region.
According to the re-collated results, Ernest Kumi secured victory with 19,269 votes, narrowly defeating Henry Yiadom Boakye of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who garnered 17,206 votes. Despite Akwatia’s status as a traditional NPP stronghold, this year’s election process was fraught with delays, disputes, and accusations that drew national attention.
Ernest Kumi, who defeated Ama Sey in the 2023 NPP primaries to secure his party’s ticket, was initially seen as a rising force within the party. However, the general elections in Akwatia proved anything but smooth. Controversies at various stages culminated in the relocation of results from Akwatia, along with Suhum, Nsawam, and Fanteakwa North, to the National Police Training School for final re-collation.
The injunction places the Swearing-in Ernest Kumi as MP for Akwatia in limbo as the court deliberates on the legal challenges surrounding Kumi’s election.
