In a resounding show of support, delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Assin North Constituency have overwhelmingly elected Charles Opoku as their candidate for the upcoming by-elections on June 27.
During the primaries held on Wednesday, June 7, Mr. Opoku secured an impressive 397 votes out of the total valid votes cast, surpassing his sole contender, Frederick Freeman Amoah-Kyei, who received 136 votes.
The primaries took place at the Church of Pentecost in Akonfodi, with the presence of NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong and other national executives.
The announcement of the results sparked jubilation among the supporters of Charles Opoku, as they broke into celebration upon the completion of the vote counting process.
The electoral officers sorted out the ballots, revealing the overwhelming support for their favored candidate.
With the victory now declared, the supporters of Charles Opoku expressed their joy and extended their congratulations to their candidate, affirming their commitment to assist in the NPP’s endeavor to reclaim the Assin North seat.
Looking ahead, Charles Opoku will face off against James Gyakye Quayson of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the by-elections.
In the 2020 elections, Mr. Gyakye Quayson emerged victorious, defeating the incumbent Abena Durowaa Mensah to secure the seat.
However, his election was subsequently challenged by a constituent who raised concerns about Mr. Gyakye Quayson’s Canadian citizenship, alleging that he had not renounced it before his nomination.
The Supreme Court ruled in favor of the constituent’s claim, resulting in Parliament being ordered to expunge Mr. Gyakye Quayson’s name from all records.
As the by-elections draw near, all eyes will be on Charles Opoku as he seeks to rally the support of the NPP and win the confidence of the constituents in Assin North.
The outcome of the by-elections will play a crucial role in determining the political landscape of the constituency moving forward.
