In a significant political development, Commissioner of Police (COP) Alex Mensah has officially declared his candidacy for the Asante Bekwai parliamentary seat in the upcoming general elections.
COP Alex Mensah, who recently retired from the Ghana Police Service, revealed his longstanding desire to enter Parliament, emphasizing that now is the opportune moment to pursue this ambition.
Speaking on Angel TV on Sunday, September 17, 2023, COP Mensah stated, “I have harbored the intention of going to Parliament for a very long time, and it is time for me to make it manifest.”
While he did not disclose the party ticket he will be running on, he had previously indicated that his family supports the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
COP Mensah’s career within the Ghana Police Service spanned various roles, culminating in his position as Director-General, Technical, until his recent retirement.
Notably, he gained widespread attention when he and others were allegedly recorded in a leaked tape discussing plans to remove the current Inspector General of Police (IGP).
In response to these allegations, COP Mensah appeared before a bipartisan parliamentary ad-hoc committee to defend himself and critique the IGP for purportedly mismanaging the service and restricting information flow within the institution.
As he embarks on this new chapter outside of the Ghana Police Service, congratulatory messages have poured in for COP Mensah.
His next significant engagement is scheduled for October 2, 2023, when he will meet with the parliamentary committee tasked with investigating the leaked tape, a pivotal moment in his political journey.
