In a somber turn of events, the Effiduase District Police command, in collaboration with environmental officers and a pathologist, has undertaken the grim task of exhuming the remains of a mother purportedly murdered by her own son in Koforidua-Kyekyewere near Nyamekrom in the Eastern Region.
This distressing revelation comes after a corona inquest by the court, prompting authorities to visit the crime scene for verification and subsequent exhumation, which unfolded in an unfinished building.
The victim, identified as Mercy Oforiwaa, a retired staff member of the Roads and Highway Authority, was reported missing on June 17, 2023, setting off a widespread search by her concerned family and a subsequent police investigation.
The suspect, twenty-six-year-old Gideon Kojo Asomani Addo, initially apprehended for theft, shockingly confessed to the heinous act during police interrogation.
The family, oblivious to the tragic fate that had befallen Mercy Oforiwaa, reported her disappearance, setting off a chain of events that led to the startling revelation.
Initially arrested for theft involving iron rods and cement, Gideon’s admission took a dark turn, revealing that he had killed his mother and clandestinely buried her in an incomplete building.
Accompanied by the suspect, the police revisited the crime scene on Wednesday, December 6, 2023, to verify the burial site and proceed with the exhumation of the decomposed remains.
Gideon’s sister, grappling with the horrifying truth, recounted the family’s desperate search for their missing mother and expressed suspicions about her brother’s peculiar behavior, ultimately leading to the shocking discovery.
Gideon Kojo Asomani Addo is currently under police custody, actively cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
The exhumed remains have been transferred to the morgue, awaiting a postmortem examination, while the community comes to terms with the profound tragedy that has befallen them.
