The Volta Regional Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Hon. James Gunu has urged the Electoral Commission to ensure that their independence is not only on paper but reflects in all the processes leading to the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
Speaking at a conference organised by the Volta Chapter of the Ghana Journalists Association(GJA) and US Embassy at Sky Plus Hotel at Ho on Thursday, November 16, 2023, Mr. Gunu stressed that all stakeholders in the election must ensure that they play their respective roles patriotically and responsibly.
According to him, for an election to be deemed free, fair and transparent, the processes leading to that election must be equally free, fair and transparent.
He called on the Electoral Commission to ensure that their independence is not only by word of mouth but by their actions throughput the electioneering process.
He lamented over the inability of the EC to provide the Voters’ Register to political parties before starting the recent Voters’Register Exhibition Exercise.
He explained that their failure to make the register available to all stakeholders before starting the Exhibition Exercise is not a good signal of their independence, fairness and transparency.
He went further to assure the media of the readiness of the NDC to work with them as partners for a free, fair and transparent election 2024.
