The Volta Region has received its consignment of ballot papers for Ghana’s general elections, scheduled for December 7, 2024. Two trucks carrying the ballot papers arrived at the Volta Regional Police Headquarters in Ho late on the night of Tuesday, November 26, at approximately 9:45 PM.
Due to the late delivery [yesterday], representatives from various political parties placed seals on the container locks and deferred the inspection process to today, Wednesday, November 27, 2024.
According to Eric Dzakpasu, the Volta Regional Director of the Electoral Commission (EC), the shipment includes:
- 186 sacks of presidential ballot papers
- 70 sacks of parliamentary ballot papers
Additionally, the consignment contains specially labeled ballot papers for special voting, ensuring they can be easily identified and distributed.
Stakeholders, including agents from political parties and independent candidates, are currently inspecting the ballot papers at the Volta Regional Police Headquarters. As of now, agents from the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), and an independent candidate from Ho Central, Mawulorm Klutse, are participating in the inspection process.
Background: Reprinting of Defective Ballot Papers
This delivery follows a recent controversy surrounding defective ballot papers initially printed for the Volta and Ahafo Regions. On November 21, 2024, the EC was compelled to destroy all defective presidential and parliamentary ballot papers due to incorrect serial numbers found during quality checks. The destruction was supervised by representatives from political parties, independent observers, the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), and the Police Service.
The EC has assured the public of its commitment to transparency and accountability throughout the electoral process, with the current reprinted batch undergoing rigorous scrutiny to avoid any further issues.
With inspections underway, stakeholders are working to ensure the integrity of the ballot papers as the nation prepares for the December 7 elections.
