Joyce Bawa Mogtari, Special Aide and cousin to John Dramani Mahama, the flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), is vouching for her boss to reconsider his 2020 running mate choice for the 2024 elections.
The private legal practitioner wants Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang to be maintained as the former President’s partner going into next year’s polls.
Speaking at the launch of the Obaasima Academy in Accra, Madam Mogtari established the need to bridge the gender gap by supporting women in leadership roles.
According to her, although Mr. Mahama has a pool of persons to choose from, there are many unstated reasons which makes her convinced that her brother will settle on the former Education minister and Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast as his running mate.
“The NDC has a constitution that stipulates the rights to who runs with any flag bearer at any given time, directing the decision of the flagbearer. I’m sure he has a whole gamut of individuals to choose from, and I have no doubt in my mind that Naana Opoku-Agyemang will still come up for enormous considerations unmentioned,” she indicated.
John Mahama, has, however, indicated that he will name his running mate in February 2024.
But Madam Mogtari noted that there are many examples to buttress the need to settle on a woman to champion the cause of men.
“I pray that in all the conversations that we are having, the choice of a running mate should at least consider the factor of the female in Ghanaian politics. There must be great examples out there as to why we can offer such platforms to women, both old and young, who will do enormous things to support the course of men,” Madam Bawa Mogtari told Accra-based Citi FM.
John Mahama in November gave the strongest indication of who his running mate will be ahead of the 2024 election.
Mr. Mahama said the individual served in his government as a Minister and discharged his duties diligently.
