The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has accused the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) of orchestrating plans to destabilize the Ashanti Region ahead of the 2024 general elections.
According to the NPP, this alleged scheme is part of a larger strategy to intimidate voters in the region, a stronghold of the ruling party. The NDC’s plans are reportedly being coordinated by retired Commissioner of Police Kofi Boakye.
At a press conference held in Accra, NPP National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye issued a stern warning, promising that any attempts to disrupt the peace would face strong resistance.
“Information available to the NPP reveals that several months ago, the NDC has been training thugs in pockets of communities, including Obuasi East Constituency under the guise of private security training. These individuals are being prepared to disrupt the electoral process, particularly in the Ashanti Region, which is the NPP stronghold,” Nana Boakye alleged.
He also revealed details of a recent meeting allegedly held by the NDC, adding further weight to the party’s claims.
“We are aware that recently on November 11, 2024, the NDC committee on mining led by one Toney Aubynn, the former Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission, held a secret meeting with some NDC small-scale miners at the Conference Hall of Mawuli Hotel in the Obuasi West Municipality.
“One of the aims of the meeting was to recruit some members of the pro-NDC small-scale miners to form part of the NDC’s Eagle Force Vigilante Group which will be deployed to some NPP polling stations to cause mayhem on election day,” Boakye said.
NPP Denies Counter Allegations of Electoral Rigging
In response to claims from the NDC that the NPP is working with Brigadier General Michael Opoku, the General Officer Commanding the Central Command of the Ghana Armed Forces, to rig the elections in the Ashanti Region, the ruling party dismissed the allegations as baseless.
“The allegations made by the Communication and the NDC are baseless. It is devoid of any iota of credible evidence and represents yet another desperate attempt by the NDC to raise tension and distract the people of Ghana from their own misdeeds,” Nana Boakye stated.
He further criticized the NDC for targeting a high-ranking military officer with unsubstantiated claims, saying, “You [say] this against a reputable army officer, with baseless allegations, you do not provide any evidence, and yet you want us to take you seriously.”
