In a scathing display of discontent, traders within the Kumasi metropolis of the Ashanti region are holding nothing back in their criticism of President Akufo-Addo, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Their message is clear: “You will not break any eight if you do not develop the region.”
The irate traders have issued a stern ultimatum, vowing to eject the NPP government from power if it persists in overlooking their stronghold in terms of developmental initiatives and maintains what they perceive as a lackluster approach to regional projects.
During a press conference held on Tuesday, October 10, 2023, Nana Asare Michael Bediako, an Executive Member of the group, minced no words in declaring that the NPP had forsaken numerous vital projects in the region while actively pursuing initiatives in other areas, particularly in the Eastern region.
Among the projects cited as abandoned were the Kumasi Kejetia Redevelopment project, the Kumasi Airport project, the Komfo Anokye Maternity Block project, the Boankra Inland Port project, and the Krofrom Market project. Additionally, the Afari Military Hospital, Sewua Regional Hospital, and Kumawu Hospital projects have been left in limbo.
Mr. Bediako didn’t stop there, also highlighting the neglect of various road projects, including the Suame Interchange project, Kwabre District roads, Manso District roads, Bosome Freho District roads, and Atwima Kwanwoma District roads, to name a few.
In a striking juxtaposition, he lamented the fact that certain projects were flourishing in the Eastern region, a situation he deemed unfortunate and shameful.
Mr. Bediako raised poignant questions, probing whether the NPP truly comprehended the pain, suffering, and frustration endured by the region’s populace, who had overwhelmingly supported the party’s rise to power yet remained deprived of the fruits of their labor.
He delivered a compelling appeal, urging the NPP government, President Akufo-Addo, and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to place the region’s development at the forefront of their priorities. He further implored the Members of Parliament representing the region to champion its progress.
In no uncertain terms, these traders have issued a formidable ultimatum: if the NPP does not prioritize their region’s development, they will not hesitate to oust the party from power, making the party’s “break the eight” mantra a seemingly unattainable goal.
