The Ghana Aids Commission has disclosed that more than 100,000 individuals in the country are carriers of HIV. Dr. Kyeremeh Atuahene, the Director General of the Commission, revealed that these carriers are unaware of their status and inadvertently spreading the virus.
During an interview with JoyNews, Dr. Atuahene presented the HIV statistics at a news conference in Accra. He highlighted that approximately 28% of people living with HIV are unaware of their condition as they have not undergone testing. This group accounts for about 100,000 individuals, who are unknowingly transmitting the virus, which is a concerning situation.
To address this issue and improve treatment success rates, Dr. Atuahene stressed the importance of everyone knowing their HIV status.
He emphasized that waiting until the onset of AIDS before seeking medical assistance significantly delays recovery and weakens the immune system, making it harder for the body to regenerate and combat the infection.
In response to the situation, the Commission has initiated an extensive search for the more than 100,000 individuals living with HIV to provide them with proper treatment.
To facilitate this effort, they have launched an HIV self-test campaign, aiming to reach underserved populations and those who may be difficult to access.
By bringing testing services to their doorstep, individuals who fear knowing their status can begin the process of getting tested to determine if they are reactive or not. This proactive approach will play a crucial role in curbing the spread of HIV in the country.
