The Ghana Police Service has taken action in the ongoing saga concerning the alleged marriage between a 63-year-old Gborbu Wulomo and a 12-year-old girl in Nungua, Accra.
Confirming their efforts, the police have successfully located the 12-year-old girl and her mother, who are now under police protection.
A statement released by the Police outlines their collaboration with the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, along with the Department of Social Welfare, to ensure the girl receives necessary support during the ongoing investigation.
In a related development, Former Minister of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Nana Oye Bampoe Addo, has urged the state to initiate legal proceedings against those involved in the controversial marriage ceremony.
She emphasized the gravity of the situation, citing legal statutes and international conventions protecting children’s rights.
Despite explanations from the Nungua Traditional Authority, concerns persist among the public regarding the marriage. The Office of the Overlord of Ga Dangme clarified that the union serves purely traditional purposes, with no expectation of conjugal relations.
Nungua Mankralo Tetteh Nii Gbotery Kofi Frankwa defended the marriage, stating that the minor’s role is ceremonial and does not compromise her childhood rights. According to him, this customary duty is essential within their community.
In adherence to tradition, the young girl has assumed a new name and will undergo further rites to fulfill her duties as the Gborbu Wulomo’s wife. The temple insists these practices are integral to their spiritual beliefs and aim to protect the girl’s purity.
Addressing critics, a temple spokesperson emphasized the importance of understanding Ga-Dangme tradition before passing judgment. He urged individuals to seek insight rather than rely solely on surface-level perceptions.
