The campaign team for Kwadjo Asante, the Member of Parliament for Suhum Constituency, popularly known as ‘Boafo,’ has firmly denied rumors suggesting that he has stepped down from his independent candidacy for the Suhum seat in the upcoming 2024 elections.
Speculation about Kwadjo Asante’s withdrawal spread rapidly after a picture of him with Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu went viral following the Speaker of Parliament’s decision to indefinitely adjourn sittings.
In an interview with Channel One News, Samuel Baah Gosh, the spokesperson for the Kwadjo Asante Boafo campaign team, strongly refuted these claims, reiterating that the MP remains in the race as an independent candidate. “Suhum MP, Hon. Kwadjo Asante is still in the race contesting as an independent candidate for the Suhum constituency come December 7, 2024,” Gosh stated emphatically.
The news of Asante’s independent run has sparked discussions among residents of Suhum, many of whom expressed their support for him in interviews with Channel One News. One resident addressed the rumors, explaining, “I heard something of that sort but, I read from the internet that he’s going independent but he has not been removed as an MP. They say the case is in court, and it’s only the court that can decide and not the Speaker of Parliament [Alban Bagbin].”
Another resident praised Asante’s contributions to the community, comparing his leadership to that of the former MP, Opare Ansah. “He’s very good. Opare Ansah was the MP for 16 good years, we didn’t witness any developmental projects. He [Kwadjo Asante] was not allowed to continue the projects he embarked on during the primaries.”
While some residents expressed skepticism about the rumors of his withdrawal, others remained steadfast in their support for him. “There was a rumor that he has stepped down, but I don’t believe it. I know it’s a rumor. He’s the one we will vote for, we will not change our decision to vote for him,” one supporter confidently stated.
Meanwhile, some ardent supporters of the Suhum MP went as far as threatening drastic actions if Asante were to reconsider his decision to run as an independent candidate. These supporters, who attributed recent infrastructure developments such as asphalt roads, hospitals, and markets to Asante’s efforts, vowed to retaliate if he withdrew. One supporter issued a stark warning: “He will not heed to any promises. If he dares us, we will burn his car. He can’t play with our hearts. We asked him to contest as an independent candidate, he’s contesting for our benefits. Because of him, we now have asphalt roads, hospitals, and markets, so if he jokes with us, we will also retaliate.”
Asante’s decision to contest as an independent candidate has clearly ignited passionate reactions within the Suhum Constituency, with both strong support and intense pressure from his base as the 2024 elections approach.
