The Electoral Commission (EC) is stirring the political pot with discussions about a potential shift in the election date from December 7 to November 7.
The proposal, reportedly put forth by EC Chairperson Jean Mensa during a meeting with the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) on January 22, suggests not only a change in the date but also designating election day as a national holiday.
According to Chairperson Jean Mensa, the motivation behind this proposal is to enhance civic engagement and foster a more robust democratic culture.
The idea aligns with a recent suggestion by the Seventh Day Adventist Church, advocating for a shift to either the 1st or 2nd Tuesday of November, emphasizing that December 7, 2024, is a day dedicated to worship.
The Church, petitioning the Attorney-General’s office, believes that the bill amending the election day should be sponsored by the Office of the Ministry of Justice and Attorney-General (Executive). They are seeking a meeting with the Honourable Minister to discuss this matter further.
Additionally, the proposal has garnered support from those who argue that holding the election in November allows ample time for transitional arrangements, crucial for a smooth political power handover before January 7, in line with the provisions of the 1992 Constitution.
