Over the weekend, a group of Constituency Executives within the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) known as the “Friends of Julius Debrah” organized a vibrant Health Walk to garner support for Julius Debrah, a former chief of staff, as the running mate for John Mahama in the upcoming 2024 general election.
This spirited march for Julius Debrah, featuring enthusiastic party supporters, was led by several constituency chairpersons, organizers, and parliamentary candidates from various regions.
They gathered at the Ayi Mensah Toll Booth and trekked to the Peduase Lodge in the Akuapem South Municipality of the Eastern Region, demonstrating their solidarity and urging Julius Debrah to seriously consider the running mate position.
Despite Julius Debrah’s public denial of actively lobbying for the running mate position, Selassie Amuzu, the Chairman of the New Juaben South Constituency in the NDC, voiced his conviction after the walk.
He declared that the former chief of staff, commonly referred to as “chief” within NDC circles, represents the ideal choice to collaborate with John Mahama in their quest to unseat the NPP in 2024.
Amuzu highlighted Julius Debrah’s successful track record as both a businessman and a politician, citing his ascent through the party’s political ranks as a testament to his suitability for the running mate role.
The motivation behind the NDC members’ push for Julius Debrah as the running mate stems from their belief that the New Patriotic Party is likely to select Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as its flagbearer.
They anticipate that this decision may have a significant impact on NDC votes in the northern sector of Ghana. Consequently, the NDC sees the need for a strong running mate from the southern sector to maximize support, particularly among the youth who view Julius Debrah as the ideal choice.
Furthermore, the NDC is confident that Julius Debrah enjoys widespread support among the party’s youth and that his selection as the running mate would greatly motivate and energize the party’s younger demographic.
