In a surprising turn of events, Kennedy Agyapong, a flagbearer hopeful of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), has extended a public apology to former President John Dramani Mahama, acknowledging what he describes as ‘unfairness’ in his previous statements and actions.
During an appearance on Accra-based Starr FM’s “Starr Chat” program on October 5, 2023, the Assin Central lawmaker expressed regret for his past conduct towards Mahama, highlighting the former president’s gentlemanly demeanor in their relationship, despite Agyapong’s persistent criticisms during Mahama’s presidency.
“The way he has handled me and how I have spoken harshly to John Mahama, I think I have not been fair to Mahama. He is such a wonderful man,” Ken remarked during his conversation with show host Bola Ray.
Agyapong went further to share anecdotes about Mahama’s wife, former First Lady Lordina Mahama, who has frequently spoken highly of him (Agyapong).
He even mentioned an intriguing hypothetical scenario, suggesting that Lordina might have considered marrying him if Mahama had not been in the picture.
“I apologize; I am a human being. I think if I recount my relationship with him and all that, I want to say I am sorry,” Agyapong stated.
It’s worth noting that Agyapong has a history of launching direct verbal attacks on John Mahama and his businessman brother, Ibrahim, while also making allegations of widespread corruption against them.
He was a prominent critic of Mahama’s administration and played various roles in supporting the NPP’s efforts in the 2016 elections, ultimately contributing to Mahama’s electoral defeat, making him the first sitting president to lose a re-election bid.
