Information available to InsiderGH.com indicates that Mr. Ernest Yaw Anim has emerged victorious in the just ended Kumawu Parliamentary by-election primaries of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
He obtained 195 of the total votes cast, followed by his closest contender, Ama Serwah N. T who obtained 181 of the total votes cast.
During a pre-election briefing, Henry Nana Boakye, the National Organizer of the NPP, informed reporters that the party is confident in its ability to achieve greater unity than ever before, after the election.
“We have met all the leaders from the various factions and I have had calls that the various factions were collaborating to ensure peace in the Kumawu constituency and we hope will come out united after this exercise,” he stated.
“We were of the view that the party in the diaspora contributes enormously to our development so, of what benefits will it be especially for the party if you have an aspirant who holds dual citizenship and contest and loses? So we were of the view that it will be double jeopardy losing both the citizenship and the primaries so we said the person can contest if he holds dual citizenship and takes considerable steps to renounce the citizenship after winning the primaries.”
The Electoral Commission (EC) has set May 23, 2023, as the date to conduct the Kumawu By-Election in the Ashanti Region.
The by-election follows the death of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Philip Basoah.
The EC requested interested parties who intend to run for the seat to obtain nomination forms from the EC’s website between April 14, 2023 and May 5, 2023 in a statement on Monday, April 17, 2023, signed by its Chairperson, Jean Mensa.
The announcement further stated that from May 2, 2023 to May 5, 2023, between the hours of 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm on each day, nominations will be accepted at the Sekyere Kumawu District Office of the Commission.
