John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has announced plans to rehabilitate and construct modern market facilities in all border towns across Ghana if elected in the upcoming December 7 general elections.
This initiative, he explained, aims to boost cross-border trade and stimulate economic activities in these key areas.
Speaking at a mini-campaign rally in Elubo during his Western Region tour, Mahama emphasized the critical role border towns play in Ghana’s economic development. He cited examples from neighboring countries, such as the bustling market in Lomé, Togo, which serves as a hub for both local and international traders, including Ghanaians.
“In Aflao, for instance, we lack a vibrant market infrastructure like what exists in Lomé. This limits our ability to attract traders from neighboring countries,” Mahama stated.
He added that the NDC’s manifesto includes a detailed plan to rehabilitate abandoned market projects and establish new market centers in border towns such as Elubo and Aflao. The goal, he explained, is to create thriving trade hubs that will drive commerce and attract businesses from across the sub-region.
This pledge is part of a broader development agenda aimed at strengthening Ghana’s trade capacity while addressing long-standing infrastructure challenges in border areas.
