Former President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama says it is a shame that the state broadcaster was asked by the government to take the cameras off him when he attended the Tamale Independence Day.
He said as a former President, he was given a corner where he could not be seen whiles dignitaries in government occupied the dias.
What’s even worrying is the fact that party supporters were bused and were made to wear party T-shirts and hoist their party flags at an event that’s supposed to be a national celebration.
“I just came from the Volta Region and when I was just leaving, they were preparing to celebrate Independence Day. I stopped going to Independence Day because it has become a party jamboree. I went to Tamale, they told GBC to take the camera off me.
They bused their supporters in and filled the whole stadium. When I got into the stadium the place was quiet, I went and sat. They gave me some corner somewhere and I went and sat there and they occupied the dais and any of them who came in was welcomed with rousing noise.”
But former President John Dramani Maham has expressed his reservations about the celebrations and what it means now.
To him, it’s now an avenue for the governing political party to bus its members just to make noise at an event that is supposed to be a solemn celebration.
To him, until Independence day returns to its original state where it is a national event and not a party event, he will never be in attendance.
