Former President and NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama has emphasized the gravity of the presidency, asserting that it should be entrusted only to serious individuals.
Mahama expressed his concerns about the casual approach some individuals have adopted towards governance, indirectly criticizing Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for various governance failures. He questioned Bawumia’s tendency to claim credit for successes while shirking responsibility for failures.
Highlighting the severe challenges Ghanaians face, Mahama stressed that this is not a time for frivolity. He argued that outdated lies and empty slogans must be replaced with genuine efforts to relieve the suffering of the people, rather than avoiding essential duties and making hollow promises.
Mahama expressed astonishment at the notion of someone who has significantly contributed to the country’s current problems now attempting to evade accountability and make baseless promises. He insisted that now is not the time for jokes or entrusting leadership to those who have shown incompetence.
“The presidency cannot be given to those who portray themselves as the future while being central to our current hardships,” he said. “It is an insult to the intelligence of Ghanaians to take credit at one moment and then disregard your responsibilities the next. Empty slogans and desperate promises have no place in the nation’s leadership,” he added.
Mr. Mahama made these remarks during a public lecture at the Christian Service University College (CSUC) in Kumasi on Wednesday. The event was part of the university’s 50th-anniversary celebrations and was themed ‘The Sustainability of Democracy in Africa: The Ghanaian Experience.’
