Investigative journalist, Manasseh Azure Awuni, is questioning the motive behind the Attorney General’s Office taking over the theft case at the residence of former Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Abena Dapaah.
Manasseh finds it dubious that the AG’s Office is getting involved in a case that is already being handled by the Office of the Special Prosecutor. He expressed his concerns in a tweet, asking if this move is part of the Chief Clearing Agent’s tactics.
Background:
Two former maids of Minister Cecilia Dapaah, identified as Patience Botwe (A1) and Sarah Adjei (A2), were brought before an Accra Circuit Court for allegedly stealing a million dollars, euros, and Ghana cedis during their employment at her residence. They are facing charges along with three other accomplices.
According to the police investigator’s brief facts about the case, A1 confessed to opening and entering the complainants’ bedroom with a duplicate key and implicated A2 as her accomplice. A2 was arrested for further investigation, and it was discovered that she used part of the stolen money to build a three-bedroom self-contained house at Budumburam.
Meanwhile, the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) had previously arrested Madam Dapaah for a corruption-related investigation and searched her residence. She was subsequently granted bail.
The Attorney General has issued an advice to the police, containing directives on the case involving the accused persons and investigations into the source of the missing funds.
