The Minority has expressed its support for Gertrude Kortornoo as the nominee for Chief Justice, assuring that they will not withhold their approval. The announcement comes as a significant endorsement for Kortornoo’s nomination.
This is despite their strong disagreement with the Supreme Court’s recent judgment annulling the election of James Gyakye Quayson in Assin North.
In a significant development, the Minority group has announced its support for Gertrude Torkornoo as the nominee for Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana.
The Minority had previously raised concerns and requested a delay in the decision-making process until the full judgment in a recent case involving Torkornoo was released.
However, after careful consideration, they have expressed their confidence in Torkornoo’s qualifications and endorsed her candidacy.
During a press conference held today, Mahama Ayariga, the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central and spokesperson for the Minority, addressed the matter.
Ayariga emphasized that despite their differences with Justice Torkornoo regarding the aforementioned case, they believe she possesses the necessary qualifications to serve as Chief Justice.
“We have reached a unanimous decision to approve the Chief Justice nominee,” Ayariga announced on behalf of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) representatives on the Appointments Committee.
Acknowledging the current concerns surrounding the reputation of the judiciary, the NDC expressed hope that Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, as the first female Chief Justice, will play a pivotal role in restoring the dignity and credibility of the judicial system in Ghana.
Highlighting Torkornoo’s extensive experience, which spans from the High Court to the Court of Appeal and ultimately the Supreme Court, Ayariga stated;
“Her impressive curriculum vitae highlights her extensive experience, having served as a judge from the High Court to the Court of Appeal, and eventually at the Supreme Court. We firmly believe that capable women should be afforded opportunities to hold key national positions. Despite our disagreement with her jurisprudence, we recognize her qualifications for the esteemed position of Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana.”
The NDC’s decision to back Gertrude Torkornoo signifies a crucial step forward in the approval process. It showcases the party’s commitment to promoting justice and the rule of law, even in the face of disagreements with recent court rulings.
As the confirmation process progresses, all eyes will be on Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, with expectations that her leadership will bring about positive changes and reforms within the judiciary.
The NDC’s support adds weight to her nomination, indicating a collective effort to restore public confidence and uphold the principles of justice for all Ghanaians. With the endorsement of the Minority, Torkornoo’s path to becoming the Chief Justice of Ghana becomes clearer.
