In a significant move to protect the democratic rights of voters affected by recent floods, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has formally requested the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana to address several urgent voter registration and management issues.
This appeal, conveyed through a letter from the NDC’s Volta Regional Secretary, Hon. James Gunu, outlines six critical measures the EC must take to ensure the integrity and efficiency of the upcoming electoral process.
Key Requests from the NDC:
- Free Replacement of Lost Voter ID Cards for Flood Victims
The NDC has urged the EC to implement a structured, localized plan to facilitate the free replacement of lost voter ID cards for flood victims currently residing in camps and resettlement homes. This initiative aims to ensure that displaced citizens can retain their democratic right to vote without unnecessary hurdles. - Inclusion of Cleared Challenged Registrants in Main Database
The letter highlights the importance of integrating the data of individuals who were challenged during the registration period but subsequently cleared by the District Registration Review Committees (DRRCs). This step is essential to prevent the disenfranchisement of eligible voters. - Reallocation of Registration Kits to Manage High Turnout
To address substantial voter turnout, the NDC has requested the reallocation of registration kits used by mobile teams in Ketu South and Ho Central to their respective district offices during the extended two-day registration period. This measure aims to ensure a smooth and efficient registration process. - Permitting Political Party Agents During Key Processes
The NDC has called for the presence of political party agents at EC offices from May 30th to June 14th, 2024. This period is critical for voter transfers, replacement of lost voter ID cards, proxy voting, and special vote applications. Allowing party agents to observe these processes will enhance transparency and trust. - Establishment of Challenge Mechanism for Voter Transfers
The letter proposes the establishment of a system to challenge voter transfer applications. This mechanism will ensure that only those who meet the qualifications for transfers are included in the voter register, maintaining its accuracy and legitimacy. - Development of Post-Exhibition Voter Verification Software:
Finally, the NDC has suggested the development of a software system enabling voters to verify their registration status even after the exhibition period and once the final register is published. This tool will empower voters to confirm their details and rectify any discrepancies promptly.
Hon. James Gunu, the Regional Secretary of the Volta NDC, expressed hope that the EC will consider these proposals seriously and take swift action to implement them. He emphasized that these measures are crucial for enhancing the electoral process and protecting the voting rights of every eligible Ghanaian.
The NDC’s appeal comes at a critical time as the country prepares for upcoming elections. Ensuring that all eligible voters, particularly those affected by recent natural disasters, can participate in the electoral process is vital for upholding Ghana’s democratic principles.
