The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of deliberately using parliamentary gridlock as a political tool to undermine the government and boost its chances in the 2024 elections.
According to the NPP, this strategy is part of a detailed plan outlined in a document allegedly created by the NDC, titled “Winning the 2024 Elections and Beyond: A Comprehensive NDC Strategy.”
The NPP claims the document reveals how the NDC plans to use its near-majority in Parliament to disrupt the legislative process, obstructing critical government business in a bid to create chaos and position itself favorably for the upcoming general election.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, October 23, NPP’s Director of Communications, Richard Ahiagbah, directly accused the NDC of collaborating with Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin to achieve this aim.
According to Ahiagbah, this partnership is designed to systematically frustrate the government’s legislative agenda, causing delays in key national programs.
“This strategy the NDC has operated with since 2021 is on full display with what is happening in parliament. So we have a situation where the NDC, for some odd reason, decides they want to be the majority and, therefore, in partnership with the speaker, actively aids that seeming coup détat by the NDC,” Ahiagbah stated.
The NPP further contends that the NDC has been executing this strategy since the current Parliament was inaugurated in 2021. The party alleges that since then, the opposition has deliberately engineered parliamentary stalemates, which have led to significant disruptions in government operations. According to the NPP, this is all part of a broader electoral strategy to weaken the ruling party’s credibility and improve the NDC’s chances in the 2024 elections.
“This is not an isolated incident,” Ahiagbah stressed. “This is part of a coordinated effort by their own design outlined in its books to ensure that they use every means available, fair or foul, to disrupt government business.”
The NPP has called on Ghanaians to stay vigilant and recognize what it describes as a calculated effort to undermine national governance. The party warned that such tactics could have severe consequences, including delaying critical development projects and stalling progress on national initiatives that are key to the country’s growth.
Despite these allegations, the NDC is yet to officially respond to the claims. However, political observers have noted the intensifying tensions between the two major parties as the 2024 election approaches, with Parliament becoming a battleground for political maneuvering.
As the accusations fly, the NPP’s warning adds a new layer to the already charged political atmosphere, suggesting that Ghana’s legislative body could face more contentious battles in the months ahead.
