Dr. Afriyie Akoto, a flag bearer hopeful of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), has expressed his apprehensions regarding the party’s current state, likening it to being on a “sick bed.” He shared these concerns during an appearance on Starr Chat.
Dr. Afriyie Akoto acknowledged the achievements of the Akufo-Addo government in its first term and emphasized that despite the government’s success, the Ghanaian populace seemed reluctant to retain the party in power.
In his words, “The first term of the Akufo-Addo government, we did extremely well, and if after that term we go to the people of Ghana to renew our mandate and they nearly sacked us, then you have to face the reality that there is something wrong.”
He raised questions about the political landscape, particularly the closely contested parliamentary situation, which has seen a rare tie in Parliament under the Fourth Republic, with 137 seats held by the NPP and 137 by the opposition.
Dr. Akoto pointed out that the NPP’s presidential majority over former President Mahama exceeded one million votes in 2016, but this margin was significantly reduced in the 2020 elections.
He compared the NPP to a patient in a hospital, asserting that it’s not in a coma but is unwell. He referenced his previous diagnosis, indicating that the party’s condition had played a role in the challenges they faced in the last election.
