A lecturer at the University of Cape Coast has raised critical concerns over the absence of a coherent message in Vice President Mahamadu Bawumia‘s campaign for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primary and the subsequent 2024 general elections.
Dr. Jonathan Asante Otchere voiced his apprehensions in the lead-up to the NPP’s presidential primary, scheduled for November 4, 2023, and amid allegations of delegate inducement involving Vice President Bawumia. These concerns were shared during an interview on Accra 100.5 FM’s evening news program on Wednesday, which was closely monitored by InsiderGH.com.
“If you ask me, I have nothing to say about the Vice President’s campaign in terms of message,” Dr. Otchere remarked, highlighting the campaign’s persistent lack of a clear and distinctive message.
He struggled to identify any specific message that the Vice President was using to propel his bid to lead the party in the 2024 elections.
He went on to observe that the Vice President’s campaign appeared to be primarily focused on garnering support from figures within the government, with little emphasis on conveying a substantive message.
In contrast, he praised Mr. Kennedy Agyepong’s campaign team for its efforts in addressing delegate welfare issues, which he regarded as a more substantial and relatable message.
Dr. Asante Otchere also expressed concerns about potential party defections if the favoritism toward the Vice President continued in the run-up to the presidential primary, suggesting that such partiality might lead to more party members breaking away.
