The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, conveyed to President Akufo-Addo that he does not possess the authority to determine his successor.
Speaking at an event in Damongo, located in the Savannah Region, where he launched the construction of a new versatile Ndewura Jakpa palace, Mahama stressed the significance of a tranquil and trustworthy election, indicating that such a bequest would stand as Akufo-Addo’s most notable contribution.
Mahama’s comments come in response to Akufo-Addo’s assertion that he cannot hand over the reins to someone he had previously ousted from office.
“Before the election, I will return here to bid you a proper farewell and express my gratitude for the support I received from you during my presidency. Hopefully, when I return, I will be accompanied by the individual who will succeed me. Wa Naa, you are aware that I cannot appoint the person I removed from office as my successor, and as a traditional ruler, you understand my perspective,” President Akufo-Addo remarked.
In reply, Mahama rejected the idea that Akufo-Addo holds sway over the selection of his successor.
“I would like to advise our president; this was my message to Nana Akufo-Addo, unfortunately, he has left, leaving only our member of the council of state at the high table.”
“I would like to advise our President that the most commendable legacy he can leave for this nation is to oversee a peaceful, open, and credible election.”
“I would like to remind him that it is God who appoints leaders, and he can never be the one to designate his successor. It is God who will choose his successor,” Mahama asserted.
