Lawyer Maurice Ampaw is making headlines in the media for his efforts to address the controversy surrounding Chairman Wontumi.
Accused by some groups of disrespecting the authority of the Ashanti kingdom’s overlord, Otumfour Osei Tutu II, Mr Ampaw took a bold stance on Sunday, January 23, 2024, to dispel certain claims made by groups such as the Ashanti Youth Group.
During the vetting process, which led to an alleged altercation between Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Wontumi) and the Kokosohene representing Otumfour, Ampaw clarified the situation.
“Chairman Wontumi is an institution “Wontumiology” and the Asantehene Otumfour Osei Tutu II does not have a political kingdom and power over Ashanti Region since the Asantehene is above them thus, all the political parties” he said
According to him, “Chairman Wontumi is an institution, ‘Wontumiology,’ and the Asantehene Otumfour Osei Tutu II does not hold political authority over the Ashanti Region since the Asantehene’s position is above political parties.”
In Ampaw’s view, Wontumi rules the political kingdom in the Ashanti Region but is subject to the larger authority of Otumfour, who is globally respected.
He emphasized that the relationship between Wontumi and Otumfour is healthy, and any negative portrayal is attributed to political propaganda aimed at undermining Wontumi’s image in an election year.
