The Ghana Police Service has initiated an inquiry into an alleged bribery incident during the Ejisu by-election, which purportedly involves Electoral Commission (EC) personnel and the Member of Parliament (MP) for Kwadaso, Dr. Kingsley Nyarko.
According to a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, the Police have invited three individuals, including George Sasu, Regina Serwaa, and Dr. Kingsley Nyarko, to provide assistance in the investigation. The Police are reportedly collaborating with the EC on this matter.
“The Ghana Police Service has launched an investigation into the alleged electoral misconduct involving certain temporary officers of the Electoral Commission and a Member of Parliament during the by-election in Ejisu, Ashanti region,” the statement read.
It further indicated that the individuals mentioned have been summoned by the Police to furnish their accounts, and the investigation is ongoing in partnership with the Electoral Commission.
The investigation stems from a complaint filed by Election Watch Ghana, a civil society group, urging the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to look into the actions of the legislator.
Footage captured during the Tuesday by-election at the Church of Pentecost Polling Station in Fumesua showed Dr. Nyarko handing an envelope to two EC officials.
Subsequently, the EC suspended the implicated officials, Regina Serwaa (Ballot Issuer) and George Sasu (Presiding Officer), as it seeks legal action against them.
Additionally, the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has initiated its own investigation into the matter.
