The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has confirmed an incident at Kotoka International Airport‘s Terminal 3 involving a passenger’s luggage emitting smoke in the baggage wrapping area of the Departure Hall.
The incident occurred on Sunday, September 22, 2024, when smoke was seen coming from a piece of luggage.
In an official statement, GACL noted, at approximately 3:27 p.m. on Sunday, September 22, 2024, smoke was detected from a passenger’s luggage at the baggage wrap area in Terminal 3, Departure Hall, Kotoka International Airport.
Upon discovery, the Aviation Security Department was immediately notified. The luggage was swiftly isolated, and passengers in the terminal were evacuated as a precaution, following GACL’s emergency procedures.
The statement further mentioned that the passenger responsible for the luggage has been handed over to the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) for questioning. GACL also issued a strong reminder to travelers not to carry batteries in their luggage, as it violates International Civil Aviation Regulations.
The statement further warned that any detection of batteries or other prohibited items in luggage will result in confiscation, and the passenger involved will be handed over to the authorities for further processing.
The GACL thanked passengers for their cooperation during the evacuation, reiterating that safety remains their top priority.
“Management wishes to thank all passengers in the Departure Hall at the time for their cooperation during the evacuation. The safety of our passengers is paramount,” the statement concluded.
