National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has publicly challenged Attorney-General Godfred Dame to personally swear an affidavit in opposition to allegations of witness tampering leveled against him.
The allegations were made by Richard Jakpa, an accused person who claimed in open court that Dame had sought his support to implicate co-accused Cassiel Ato Forson in the ongoing ambulance purchase trial.
Jakpa’s lawyers had filed an application for mistrial, citing a recent leaked tape as evidence, which Dame opposed through a Principal State Attorney at the A-G’s office.
Sammy Gyamfi criticized Dame’s decision to delegate the affidavit to a subordinate, suggesting that Dame avoided personally deposing to the application out of fear of perjury, given the tape’s contents. “These are matters before the court in several affidavits, and you have the right, if you think these allegations are not true, to formally oppose them yourself,” Sammy Gyamfi stated.
He referenced Dame’s earlier comment that “God will speak for him,” countering, “Well, he can speak for himself because God helps those who help themselves.” Gyamfi questioned why Dame had not sworn any affidavit to contest the serious allegations directly, implying that Dame’s reluctance might stem from fear of the consequences of lying under oath.
“Very strangely, he has not been able to swear to any affidavit to oppose those material facts against him as a person,” Sammy Gyamfi emphasized to the media on June 4, 2024.
He stressed that the use of a Principal State Attorney to handle the affidavit indicates a deliberate attempt to avoid direct accountability.
“In any case, why can’t Godfred Dame speak for himself? Why can’t he swear an affidavit and oppose the allegations or the evidential averments made against him by the accused persons?” Gyamfi questioned. He suggested that Dame’s strategy was to shift responsibility and have someone else deny the allegations on his behalf, calling this approach “incredible.”
