In a bold statement reflecting growing concerns over electoral integrity, Hon. James Gunu, the Volta Regional Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), declared that the upcoming 2024 election is “too risky to rig.”
Mr. Gunu emphasized the heightened vigilance and measures being undertaken to ensure a free and fair electoral process, reinforcing the NDC’s commitment to safeguarding democracy in Ghana.
Speaking to InsiderGH.com, Mr. Gunu outlined several strategies that must be implemented to prevent election rigging.
He called on the EC for the deployment of advanced technology in the voting process, including biometric verification systems and real-time electronic transmission of results.
Mr. Gunu also stressed the importance of voter education and empowerment. “An informed electorate is our strongest defense against manipulation,” he said, urging civic organizations and media outlets to engage in widespread voter education campaigns.
He highlighted the need for voters to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities that could compromise the integrity of the election.
In a direct challenge to the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the Electoral Commission (EC), Mr. Gunu affirmed that the NDC is prepared to confront any attempts to undermine the electoral process.
“The NDC is ready to face off against the NPP and the EC in any attempts to rig this election,” he declared. Mr. Gunu cited past instances where the NDC had successfully mobilized to counteract electoral malpractice and vowed that the party would be even more resolute in 2024.
He criticized what he described as “systematic efforts” by the NPP to influence the electoral outcome through questionable means, including alleged manipulation of voter rolls and interference with the independence of the EC.
“We will not allow the will of the people to be subverted,” Mr. Gunu asserted.
