Two individuals have tragically lost their lives, reportedly struck by stray bullets fired by the police amid a confrontation aimed at dispersing an agitated crowd in the Kwahu South Municipality of the Eastern Region.
The incident unfolded at the chief’s palace, where law enforcement officers had been summoned to rescue a suspected individual accused of the heinous crime of murdering two individuals in Adwumasu, a farming community within the Kwahu South Municipality.
The alleged perpetrator, identified as 23-year-old Kwasi Tenkorang, reportedly an ex-convict, stands accused of raping and murdering a 45-year-old woman named Akua Kyerewaa, according to sources.
Tragically, during the incident, a 65-year-old brother of the victim, Kwasi Antwi, who attempted to intervene, was fatally struck on the head with a metal bar, resulting in his immediate demise.
An eyewitness known only as Frederick narrowly escaped harm while en route to the farm, having witnessed the events unfold and subsequently being pursued by the suspect.
Following his alleged crime, the suspect had evaded capture until his arrest on Sunday, February 4th, whereupon he was brought to the chief’s palace.
Upon learning of the suspect’s apprehension, enraged members of the community descended upon the palace, demanding immediate retribution. However, their attempts were thwarted by law enforcement officers summoned to the scene.
Frustration among the community members escalated, leading to a confrontation with the police, during which stones were hurled, resulting in the destruction of a police service vehicle and four motorbikes.
In an effort to disperse the increasingly unruly crowd, the police resorted to firing warning shots, inadvertently injuring five individuals. Tragically, two of those injured succumbed to their wounds, while the remaining three are currently receiving medical treatment at the Kwahu Government Hospital in Atibie.
