Despite the Bank of Ghana’s statement explaining its reasons for commencing the construction of a new headquarters amidst economic challenges, some members of the public continue to criticize the decision.
Charles Elias Reindorf, the Director of Finance at the central bank, provided further explanations regarding the issues surrounding the new head office project that began in 2021 and is now in an advanced stage of completion.
During an interview on Asempa TV, Elias Reindorf clarified that the plan for constructing the new head office was in motion before Ghana’s economic crisis unfolded. He emphasized that the bank had not foreseen the country’s economic downturn.
“The project had started before COVID set in… it has been on the drawing board for more than four or five years now. It was only about two or three years ago when we actualized it,” he explained.
Elias Reindorf also highlighted that the decision to build a new office was driven by structural issues found at their current headquarters, such as cracks and other concerns. He stressed the importance of prioritizing the safety of lives and property.
Responding to allegations that the bank had allocated $250 million for the new facility, he stated that he did not have an exact figure at hand to confirm or deny such claims.
As for the completion date of the new office, Elias Reindorf was unable to provide a specific timeline during the interview.
